Business or Family...or Both!

In the past when I traveled, I remember feeling grateful that I could work from just about anywhere in the world as long as they had internet access.
That’s not a bad thing…but I can also remember taking my wife and son on a special holiday at a resort for my wife's 50th birthday…
I was unable to join them for dinner because I was needed for some critical production issues one of our top clients was experiencing.
Eventually I broke free…joined them…started to relax…only to get called back in and had to leave them again.
It was a terrible feeling…being pulled between my business and my family.
I felt a lot of guilt, frustration…and then the rationalization…why maybe it was ok…after all the business was paying for the trip.
It did not feel ok…and I also knew I did not want to continue living this way.
Today, I can have both!
I’m in Europe on holiday. My exec-team is manning the ship. We have protocols for how to fire up a flare if I’m needed.
This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It took a while but what a difference both in the quality of how my business runs and also the lack of stress in my life…no more push and pull between family and business.
The joy of being fully present with my family when we’re traveling is priceless.
