Exercising Your Emotional Muscles

Years ago a good friend of mine got me an opportunity to teach C++ programming at NYU School of Continuing Education.
NYU…of course! What an opportunity!
…then the fear set in.
How am I going to pull this off? At that time, I was terrified of public speaking…but I knew I had to do it.
It reminded me of the Seinfeld joke…”I was the guy who would rather be in the casket than have to give the eulogy”
And wow, did I over prepare…
I created a lot of docs…lost some sleep…did a lot of coding for examples…lost some more sleep…created some slide decks…no sleep again…
Then the first day of classes came…
I’m not sure how my colleagues (who were also teaching at the time) would feel now about the fact that I was kinda hoping the subway would derail on the way down to Union Square…but alas, it did not.
The first class was tough…but it got easier and easier over time…and now it’s hard to shut me up when I’m speaking in front of a group of people.
🌟 I exercised my emotional muscles and got over an irrational fear.
❗ Now, I really enjoy public speaking.
I often use this story when I’m working with business owners who are stuck in some similar fear.
I’m fortunate to get to work with some gifted entrepreneurs who (like many of us) get stuck in some fear around speaking, writing posts and/or networking…key tools for building their business.
I’ve come up with a lot of different tools over the years to help get past this…exercising these muscles to the point where those things that bring you fear can turn into activities that bring you joy and move you closer to your goals.
▶ If this resonates with you, take the first step…the first exercise to work past your fear and DM me. We’ll move past it together!
