I was on a call the other day and I heard a business owner talking to the moderator about how he was concerned about AI and how it might impact his business.

The suggestion was to

"Don’t worry about it. It's mostly media hype, just like cloud computing was."

This made me think back about cloud computing.

When AWS allowed people to purchase infrastructure fractionally, with “pay as you go” with a credit card. They eliminated all kinds of friction and disrupted all kinds of industries.

▶ No more licensing models

▶ No more purchase orders

▶ No more long contracts.

You got a credit card, fire up some servers. Turn it off, you don't pay anymore.

This was brand new.

It disrupted all kinds of IT solution providers. It also enabled any small business to be able to compete in all kinds of areas they could not do before because of how easy it was.

There was no friction on the infrastructure side.

It was disruptive.

That industry is forecasted to be worth close to a trillion dollars by 2026!

There was hype around cloud computing at that time, but it started from something real…and business owners ignored it at their own peril.

I think there's some correlations to this with generative AI.

It's not just the advancements in the models, but it's the accessibility.

▶ We can have it on our phone.

▶ On our laptops

▶ The APIs are very easy to integrate into your existing applications

It is easy to build new ones.

▶ It's “pay as you go”

▶ So it doesn't cost a lot of money to get started.

Ignore the hype if you want, but don't ignore the technology.

There's something real there….and your competitors are paying attention.
