Make Space for the Elephants

In most of our meetings there is a small chunk of time for ‘check ins’.

It’s a few minutes to check in with each other on something personal and something about business.

Every week I meet for 90 minutes with my Integrator.

Side note: An Integrator is a key role in the leadership team and is all about helping the Visionary (in this case me) implement their strategies - this is from EOS.

There are several exciting things happening for both of us that we were talking about…but there were some underlying issues that were brewing.

Some new potential conflicts that were outside the norm…an elephant entered the room!

During the check in, she brought some of these items which were uncomfortable to talk about at first but we were aligned on the fact that we did need to address these new things.

This practice is not new for us and is encouraged throughout my companies and I encourage this practice for my clients particularly in leadership meetings.

The end result is emotional relief, building more trust in the relationship(s), better productivity and problem resolution.

Not only did we get rid of the elephant, but having the tension released started me seeing other opportunities for us to really capitalize on these new things.

Are you avoiding any critical issues and hope they will ‘just get better next month’?

🔅 You have a problem employee

🔅 Sales are flat

🔅 There’s conflict in your leadership team

🔅 You have no time

🔅 You’re disengaged

🔅 You keep missing delivery dates

🔅 You’re running out of cash

Make space in your meetings, especially leadership meetings for these check ins.

It builds a deeper level of trust and a stronger bond in the relationships of team members and it’s a powerful way to keep the elephants out of the room.
