I've been working with a number of people who have been in a career for 2-3 decades and either sold their businesses, lost their jobs and they're feeling a little burned and lost, not sure what to do next...but they still love what they do.
This has happened to me and something that I really like to use for myself is the Japanese model of Ikigai.
This is really about what gives your life purpose and meaning…and it's tied to your vocation.
🔅 What things are you really passionate about,
🔅 That you are you really good at,
🔅 That you can get paid for
🔅 And are really going to make an impact on the world?
Having this alignment for your purpose and making sure it's also aligned with putting some food on the table, will provide more joy in your work.
It gives you a lot more power to move forward in continuously learning and getting better at whatever that skill is.
But it's also making sure that you have your feet on the ground.
Like I love and I've been passionate about for a while, oil painting.
There was a period of time where I got all the gear, started to study, took some lessons.
I gotta say…I was pretty terrible and reasonably confident that I would never be able to get paid for oil painting.
I certainly don't want to discourage anybody who loves oil painting. I have a family member who started doing this in her forties and she's crushing it. Just wickedly talented and gallery showings, the whole thing.
When I'm working with people who are in this state of transition, they start getting discouraged.
🔅 They still love what they do.
🔅 They don't or can’t get a job the way I did it before.
🔅 Maybe one of the reasons they lost their job or business is that technology just changed everything for them.
So what do they do now?
In this case, it's really about reframing or repackaging themselves in a different way.
If you're someone who's got a couple of decades of experience;
Repackage yourself…brand yourself in a different way.
You can wind up having an impact on a lot of people!
There are these micro communities on things like Skool and Mighty Networks where people are taking years and years of experience and training and helping people, large groups of people.
🔅 You get to keep your passion.
🔅 You get to continue to get good at what you're doing.
🔅 And now you have this big impact on a large community.
🔅 And you're making some money doing it.
So if you feel yourself stuck and you're going through a transition and you're trying to figure out something different, try and repackage.
It works!
Make sure you're aligned with your purpose because that'll drive you through the difficult times. There's a lot of opportunity out there.
Think about how you're really able to take the things that you love to do and help a lot of people while you're doing it and get paid.
